How it works

Screenshots from the Pump.fun app, October 2026. Prices are just examples.

  1. Pump.fun Stocks tab listing Tesla, Micron, SK hynix, the QQQ ETF and Pre-IPO tokens with prices

    1.Open the Stocks tab

Tesla, Micron, the QQQ ETF and more, priced in dollars. Heads up: the “Pre-IPO” ones aren't shares in those companies.

  2. Pump.fun page for the Micron (MU) stock token showing its chart, a verified badge and a green trade button

    2.Pick the stock you want

Tap a stock to see its chart, then hit the green button to trade. Check for the badge next to the name so you get the real token, not a lookalike.

  3. Pump.fun buy screen entering 5 USDC for Micron with a 0.4% fee shown above the Submit button

    3.Buy with USDC

No crypto yet? Tap Deposit and top up with Apple Pay (Apple Card works too) or a debit or credit card. The fee shows before you hit Submit — 0.40% with a referral code.

Popular US stocks to buy in Japan

Crypto rules in Japan

Crypto exchanges serving Japan must register with the Financial Services Agency (FSA), which publishes a list of registered exchanges and warnings about unregistered overseas ones.

A separate registration for intermediaries working with registered crypto and stablecoin businesses started on 1 June 2026.

Money and tax in Japan

Local currency: Japanese yen (JPY). Card and Apple Pay top-ups are converted to USDC, so your card provider may add a currency conversion fee.

Tax: The National Tax Agency generally treats individuals' crypto profits as miscellaneous income, added to your other income and taxed at your normal rate (guidance updated December 2025).

What you're actually buying

A token that tracks a real US share 1:1. The issuer holds the actual shares; you hold the token. Price moves and reinvested dividends, yes. Voting rights and a seat at the shareholder meeting, no.

Good to know in Japan

  • Crypto exchanges serving people in Japan must register with the FSA, which warns about unregistered overseas operators. Check its list before you sign up.
  • Japanese brokers also sell real US shares, which may be the simpler route.
  • Gains may be taxable. A local tax adviser can tell you how.

Who regulates this

Questions people ask

How do I check a crypto exchange in Japan?

Look for it on the FSA's list of registered crypto exchange providers. The same page lists warnings about unregistered operators.

Is swapping one crypto for another taxable in Japan?

Yes. The National Tax Agency's FAQ treats crypto-to-crypto swaps and paying with crypto as transactions where you work out a gain.

Are tokenized US stocks legal in Japan?

Honestly, it depends on the product and on Japan's own rules for securities, crypto and moving money abroad. We haven't finished checking Japan yet, so we're not making a legal call. The regulator linked on this page is the best place to check.

Do I own the actual shares?

Usually not directly. With xStocks, the issuer holds the real shares and you hold a token that tracks them. Other products work differently — some are just contracts tracking the price. Voting rights and cash dividends are normally not included.

Can I use a VPN if an app blocks Japan?

Please don't. Getting around location blocks, sanctions or ID checks breaks the app's rules, can get your money frozen, and may be illegal.
