Risks specific to tokenized assets
- Issuer risk — the company issuing the token may fail or default.
- Custody risk — underlying assets are held by third parties.
- Liquidity risk — you may not be able to sell quickly or at a fair price.
- Counterparty risk — you depend on platforms, market makers and custodians meeting obligations.
- Smart-contract risk — software bugs, exploits or lost keys can cause irreversible loss.
- Regulatory risk — rules can change, and access can be withdrawn.
Different products, different rights
Never assume a tokenized stock gives you shareholder rights, voting rights, dividends or direct redemption. These categories are legally distinct:
| Type | What you own | Shareholder rights |
|---|---|---|
| Direct shares | Actual company shares via a broker | Usually dividends & voting |
| Tokenized securities | A regulated token or note from an issuer | Defined by issuer terms |
| Synthetic / derivative | A contract tracking the price | No shareholder rights |
| ETFs | Units in a fund holding many shares | Fund distributions |
| Price-tracking crypto | A crypto asset with no claim on shares | None |
Your responsibility
Check that any product is lawful for you to buy where you live, and consider speaking to a licensed adviser. Never invest money you cannot afford to lose.
