Tokenized US stocks in Canada
Short answer: we don't know of a tokenized stock app that accepts people living in Canada right now. Here's why, and what to keep an eye on.
US stocks: your options in Canada
Crypto rules in Canada
You can buy crypto in Canada through platforms registered to serve your province or territory. Check your provincial regulator's register rather than assuming an overseas app is allowed.
Money and tax in Canada
Local currency: Canadian dollar (CAD).
Paying and sending money abroad: Canadian investment dealers sell real US shares, and qualifying shares can go in a TFSA or RRSP. US dividends may have tax withheld.
Tax: For crypto held as an investment, half of a capital gain is added to your taxable income. Frequent trading that counts as a business is taxed as business income. The planned increase to that inclusion rate was cancelled in March 2025.
What you're actually buying
A token that tracks a real US share 1:1. The issuer holds the actual shares; you hold the token. Price moves and reinvested dividends, yes. Voting rights and a seat at the shareholder meeting, no.
More on how tokenized stocks workGood to know in Canada
- Crypto trading platforms serving Canadians must register with the provincial securities regulators. The CSA keeps a list of registered platforms.
- Canadian brokers sell real US shares, which is usually the simpler route.
- xStocks, the stock tokens sold on Pump.fun and Kraken, aren't offered to people living in Canada, so we don't list them here.
- Gains may be taxable. A local tax adviser can tell you how.
Who regulates this
- Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) — Umbrella group of the provincial securities regulators
- CIRO — Oversees investment dealers
Questions people ask
Does the 50% inclusion rate mean I lose half my profit to tax?
No. Half the gain is added to your taxable income and taxed at your normal rate.
Can I hold US stocks in a TFSA or RRSP?
Generally yes, for qualifying shares listed on a designated stock exchange, if your account provider supports them.
Are tokenized US stocks legal in Canada?
Honestly, it depends on the product and on Canada's own rules for securities, crypto and moving money abroad. We haven't finished checking Canada yet, so we're not making a legal call. The regulator linked on this page is the best place to check.
Do I own the actual shares?
Usually not directly. With xStocks, the issuer holds the real shares and you hold a token that tracks them. Other products work differently — some are just contracts tracking the price. Voting rights and cash dividends are normally not included.
Can I use a VPN if an app blocks Canada?
Please don't. Getting around location blocks, sanctions or ID checks breaks the app's rules, can get your money frozen, and may be illegal.
